Boldo
From Wikipedia, the free
encyclopedia
Boldo (Peumus boldus Molina) is a
plant native to the coastal region of Chile. Its leaves, which
have a strong woody aroma, are used for culinary purposes, primarily in
Latin America. The leaves are used in a similar manner to
bay
leaves.
The leaves are also used as an herbal tea,
primarily in Chile and Argentina but also in
other Spanish-speaking nations, and Brazil. They are used as
a form of herbal medicine, particularly to support the
gallbladder, but also to calm upset stomachs. In Brazil, many
families keep a Boldo plant at home for this purpose, although Boldo
teabags are readily available in nearly all supermarkets.
Boldo is in the family Monimiaceae, which
is closely related to the family Lauraceae (which
includes many other plants used for their aromatic leaves, such as
cinnamon, cassia, and
bay
leaf.
Boldo has also been introduced to
Europe
and North Africa.
Espinheira-santa
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The
espinheira-santa (Maytenus ilicifolia (Schrader) Planch; Celastraceae)
it is one plant that demands sun. In external gardens it reaches the tree load,
with up to three meters of height. In big vases, in balconies, it reaches until
a meter.
It is prescribed by the
popular medicine in the combat to the problems of acidity stomach, because it
calms the pains of the ulcers and it avoids the fermentation and the formation
of stomach gas.
Globe artichoke
From Wikipedia, the free
encyclopedia
The Globe Artichoke (Cynara scolymus)
is a perennial,
thistle-like
plant, originating in southern Europe
around the Mediterranean. It
grows to 1.5-2 m tall, with arching, deeply lobed, silvery glaucous-green
leaves
50-80 cm long. The flowers develop in a
large head from an edible bud about 8-15 cm diameter with numerous
triangular scales; the individual florets are purple.

Maytenus ilicifolia (Celastraceae) is a native plant from Tropical Atlantic
Forest (Mata Atlantica, Brazil) called 'espinheira-santa'. This plant is
traditionally used as anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antiulcerogenic. Many
studies focusing pharmacological and toxicological aspects of the plant have
been performed. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy
(anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities and protection against gastric
lesions, including cytoprotection and healing) and phytochemical profile of
hexane and ethylacetate extracts of Maytenus ilicifolia. Per os administration
of these extracts inhibited nociception and formaldehyde-induced paw oedema in
mice and carrageenin-induced paw oedema in rats. Severity of gastric lesions
induced by cold-restraint stress (-18 degrees C for 45 min) method was also
clearly reduced in rats considering both cytoprotection and healing aspects.
Administration of the extracts led to volume gastric and pH increase. These
results suggest that hexane and ethylacetate extracts of Maytenus ilicifolia may
represent an important clinical alternative in anti-inflammatory and
antiulcerogenic therapeutics, though, further experiments should be performed to
confirm this assertion.

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to evaluate the possible antispasmodic activity
in vitro of methanolic extracts (ME) of six Brazilian medicinal plants. METHODS:
The extracts were evaluated on isolated guinea-pig ileum and rat duodenum
preparations. RESULTS: Rubus imperialis, Maytenus robusta, Ipomoea pes caprae
and Epidendrum mosenii did not inhibit the contractile response elicited by
acetylcholine on guinea-pig ileum. On the other hand, ME from Calophyllum
brasiliense and Cynara scolymus exhibited significant inhibitory activity for
the contractile response elicited by acetylcholine on guinea-pig ileum and on
rat duodenum in a noncompetitive and concentration-dependent manner.
CONCLUSIONS: The current study suggests that, of the six medicinal plants
evaluated, only the ME of Calophyllum brasiliense and Cynara scolymus show
probable antispasmodic activity, confirming and justifying their use in folk
medicine for the treatment of intestinal disorders.
